How to Help

FIND THE WORDS

“Are you thinking of ending your life?” Few phrases are as difficult to say to a loved one.
But when it comes to suicide prevention, none are more important. Here are some ways to get the conversation started.

Get some resources ready, such as crisis hotlines, text lines, and the number for a local mental health center.

Make sure there’s time for what could be a lengthy conversation. They need your support, right now.

Practice what you’ll say, and be sure to mention the signs you’ve seen. This will help the person understand someone cares and establish trust.

Ask them directly, “Are you thinking about killing yourself?” or “Have you been thinking about suicide?”
